Volatile cyclic silicone fluid for cosmetic formulations
CM 50 Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) is a colourless, volatile silicone fluid from the cyclomethicone group. You use it as a base fluid in personal care products. With a viscosity of 4.0 mm²/s and a surface tension of 18.0 mN/m at 25 °C, CM 50 spreads excellently, rubs in easily and leaves no oily residue. Its specific gravity is 0.95 g/cm³, its flash point (closed cup) 77 °C and its boiling point 205 °C. The cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) content is below 1.0 %.

Processing
- Use CM 50 on its own or blended with other cosmetic fluids as a liquid base for other cosmetic ingredients.
- CM 50 dissolves well in most anhydrous alcohols and in many cosmetic solvents.
- In sticks, use CM 50 to balance volatility and spreading.
- Keep containers closed as much as possible while working. CM 50 has a significant vapour pressure at room temperature.
Points of attention
- ✓ D5 falls under REACH Annex XVII, entry 70. Since 31 January 2020, wash-off cosmetics may contain no more than 0.1 % D5. For other cosmetics this limit applies from 6 June 2027. Since 6 June 2026 a general restriction also applies to D5 on its own and in mixtures, with a number of exemptions. Check in advance whether your application is permitted.
- ✓ Looking for an alternative for new formulations? Consider a linear, volatile dimethicone such as Silicone Oil 1.5 cSt or Silicone Oil 2 cSt.
- ✓ Take care at temperatures from 10 °C below the flash point of 77 °C. Keep containers closed and away from heat, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources.
- ✓ CM 50 has not been tested for, and is not considered suitable for, medical or pharmaceutical use.
- ✓ In its original unopened container at no more than 25 °C, CM 50 has a shelf life of 36 months from the date of manufacture. The expiry date is shown on the packaging. Never use an open flame to thaw frozen material.
