Premium Sulphur-Free Oil-Based Modelling Clay for Sculpting, Special Effects and Mould Making
Monster Clay® Grey is a reusable, sulphur-free oil and wax-based modelling clay from The Monster Makers, made for professional sculpting. According to the manufacturer, it is made entirely from non-toxic, food-grade components and has an ultra-smooth texture, a low melting temperature and low tack: it does not stick to tools or fingers. At room temperature Monster Clay is firm enough for fine detail; slightly warmed, it stretches like toffee. Because it is sulphur-free, you can mould it directly with platinum (addition-cure) silicones. Monster Clay melts at approx. 57 °C into a pourable mass and becomes solid again on cooling, without any change to its composition. You can choose Soft, Medium or Hard, each in a 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) block in a reusable, ovenproof tub.
Key Benefits
- Sulphur-free: compatible with platinum (addition-cure) silicones – mould your sculpture directly without inhibiting the silicone cure.
- Never dries out: non-polymerising and non-oxidising – the clay does not become brittle and can be reused endlessly.
- Melts at approx. 57 °C: pourable at around 66 °C – ideal for casting copies of life casts or prototypes and refining them afterwards.
- Low tack: does not stick to tools or fingers – for clean, precise detailing.
- High elasticity: stretches like toffee when warm – for shapes that are difficult with other clays.
- Approx. 25% more clay per kilo: lower density than standard oil-based clays – you get more out of the same weight.
Typical Applications
- Sculpting and modelling figures, busts and creatures
- Special effects, masks and props for film, theatre and cosplay
- Master models for moulding with silicone, alginate or polyurethane
- Casting the clay into flexible moulds for copies of life casts and prototypes
- Models for resin moulds and for 3D scanning and printing
- Prototypes for stop-motion figures
Processing Instructions:
- Choose the hardness that suits your project: Soft for rough shapes, Medium for general use and Hard for sharp detail. You can blend the grades for an intermediate hardness; once mixed, they cannot be separated.
- Warm the clay to soften it, for example under a heat lamp or in the oven. Place the tub on a baking tray in the oven, never directly on the rack. The clay is comfortable to knead up to 46 °C.
- Sculpt with your hands, modelling tools or texture stamps. Warm small areas locally with a hairdryer.
- Smooth the surface with 99% isopropyl alcohol, citrus solvent or odourless mineral spirits.
- Want to cast? Melt the clay (melting point approx. 57 °C, optimal pouring at around 66 °C) and stir regularly while melting so the components do not separate. Pour into a silicone, alginate or polyurethane mould; no release agent is needed. Never heat above 82 °C.
- Let the clay cool for 15 to 30 minutes, briefly in the fridge if you like. Reuse leftovers as often as you want.
Please Note
- Never heat the clay above 82 °C or over an open flame. Overheated clay can separate, release oil or smoke; discard clay that has discoloured or changed.
- We advise against using a microwave: the clay melts from the inside, so you cannot see hot, molten clay. This can cause serious burns and a fire hazard.
- Wear heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses when working with molten clay. Cool skin that has come into contact with hot clay immediately with plenty of cold water.
- Not intended for children under 18, not suitable for consumption and not for direct use on the skin or for prosthetics.
- Monster Clay does not cure and deforms in heat and sunlight. Use a work mat, as the clay can stain porous surfaces.
- Store the clay closed, cool and dry, out of direct sunlight. Stored this way, it keeps for at least 5 years.
Manufactured by The Monster Makers, Inc. of Cleveland (Ohio, United States), specialists in materials for special effects, masks and sculpting since 1991.
